Gilman Brewing "Champ Rochaux" ★★★ 1/2

This is a 6.5% tart saison fermented with half a ton of nectarines. It’s refreshing, crisp and a little tart. This may be a bit older than the first time I tried it out of a can. I do really like the balance of this from the fruit to the yeastiness of it. This is a really well made beer. In the same way that a ripe nectarine has a nice round sweetness with a “tang” at the end, this coats the palate giving a nice dry finish with a tart backbone. That said, I could stand for it to be a little more sour.

Man, this is right up the alley of a traditional saison. Everything (right down to the yeast) is as-advertised and I absolutely hate it. There is a nectarine taste there but it’s definitely underneath the yeast profile and I definitely expected more tartness. This has a lot of great qualities (mouthfeel, finish) and it’s good except for the flavor which, I know, is a terrible thing to say about beer. I like all of the parts of it… except for those that I don’t which just happen to be the most overwhelming parts of it. I think ultimately, it’s well-made and just not for me.
